I really enjoyed training for this race and having the opportunity to do it with my family. We were able to set goal times and we either reached them or we even exceeded them.

Training and Nutrition to help give energy for a 5K
For my project I created a training plan for my mom, my brother and myself. This training plan had each
day outlined and what we would do each day for training. It outlined ten weeks of exercises to help get
us each in shape to run a 5k race. I asked my mom and my brother to give me a goal time that they
would like to reach for the 5k race. We took these times and our goal was to either hit it or to even do
better than the goal.
I gave my mom and my brother a list of foods that would be good to eat before exercising, especially
running, that they could eat. I also gave them each a list of foods that they could eat to help replenish
energy after a longer run/workout. After ten weeks of training and eating foods to help with energy we
ran the 2017 Summer Games 5k on June 10. We were all able to reach and exceed the goals that we had
set for ourselves. My brother and I also ended up placing in the race and taking 3rd in our age divisions.

The reason I chose to do this for my project was mainly because I thought it would be fun. It was a
fantastic experience to figure out what we needed to do to prepare for the race to make sure we would
be in the correct shape. It was really interesting to find out what foods would help you out more with
energy and what foods to avoid when running, especially when running in the morning. I really enjoyed
that I was able to do it with my family, we had a lot of fun preparing together and then running
together. I’ve always loved nutrition and fitness so this project was a great way to combine the two
things that I really enjoy.
A huge problem that I encountered was that I had originally planned on my dad running the race with
me and my mom. I created a training schedule and list of foods for him, however my dad works for the
BLM and was called on a fire the night before the race. Luckily when I was talking about doing this
project both my brothers said that it sounded fun and they said that they wanted to do it as well. So I
had created a plan for my older brother just because he asked me to do it for him so he could get in
shape for the race. So even though the fact that we paid and planned on my dad doing the race he was
not able to make it, but luckily my brothers did it.
I know that this project benefited my mom, and my brother both. They both loved the fact that they felt
like they had to work out so they could be working towards those goals that they had set at the
beginning. They both said that they didn’t want to get worse than what they set, they wanted to work
hard to meet those expectations they had for themselves. With the goal that they were working towards
they were able to lose some weight and feel better about themselves. It was able to benefit both of
them in the fact that they were able to get into better shape and that made them feel better about
themselves.
This project was a huge benefit to me, because I was able to get in better shape myself. It was fun to
work towards something instead of just trying to convince myself to get up and go on a run each
morning. It also helped me find out foods that are better for you and better to help provide energy as
well as replenish energy. I also feel like it benefitted my relationship with my family, we were able to do
all this together and so we spent a lot of time together for 10 weeks. It was a good experience and I
would definitely do it again and maybe even push myself
